Closeboard Fencing · Loughborough & Charnwood

Closeboard Fencing across Charnwood.

Closeboard is the fence we would put round our own gardens: featheredge boards nailed to arris rails on solid posts, built board by board on site rather than lifted in as a panel. It follows awkward boundaries, shrugs off wind, and when one board fails in fifteen years you replace one board — not a panel.

Straight answers

Things people ask about closeboard fencing.

What makes closeboard better than panels?
Strength and repairability. Panels fail as a unit; closeboard is hundreds of overlapping boards on continuous rails, so wind load spreads along the whole run and any single board can be swapped in minutes years later.
How long does closeboard last?
Pressure-treated featheredge on sound posts is routinely good for 15–20 years, and longer with gravel boards keeping it out of the wet. Posts fail before boards do — which is why we set them properly.
Can closeboard follow a sloping or curved boundary?
Yes — that is its whole advantage. Because it is built in place, the rails rake with the slope and the boards stay vertical, so the top line follows the garden instead of stepping.
Is closeboard good in wind?
It is the fence we recommend for exposed runs. The load spreads across every board and rail rather than hammering one panel's frame — most storm callouts we attend are panel fences, not closeboard.
Capped or uncapped?
A capping rail and counter-rail keep water out of the end grain and stiffen the top edge — a small cost on the day that adds years. We price it as an option so you can decide.
