Post & Rail Fencing across Charnwood.

Post and rail is the fence for paddocks, pony fields and long rural boundaries: two, three or four rails on posts set to a line you can sight down. We build in half-round or sawn timber, add stock netting where sheep or dogs are the issue, and brace the corners so the run is still tight in twenty years.

Straight answers

Things people ask about post & rail fencing.

How many rails do I need?
Three is the standard for horses and general boundaries; four for foals, small ponies or anywhere stock pushes; two reads as decorative marking rather than containment. Netting under the rails sorts dogs and sheep.
Half-round or sawn rails?
Half-round is the traditional paddock look and slightly kinder on budgets over distance; sawn square rails read neater around houses and gardens. Structurally both are sound — it is an appearance call.
How long does post and rail last?
Treated posts and rails are good for 15–25 years depending on ground. The failure point is always the post at ground line, which is why we take setting them seriously.
Is post and rail safe for horses?
It is the standard for a reason — no mesh to catch a shoe, rails that break before a leg does, and good visibility so stock do not test it. We fit it rail-side-in on paddocks so pushing tightens rather than pops the rails.
Can you fence a whole field?
Yes — long runs are where post and rail gets economical per metre. We quote from a walk of the boundary or from your field maps.
